Using Auto Lifts for Mandatory Vehicle Inspections

For states that have mandatory vehicle inspections, the process is usually very rigorous. State law requires that certain minimum requirements are met for a vehicle to be on the road. The qualifications for car inspection stations are tough, as the state relies upon experts to guard the roadways against run down or mechanically unsound cars and trucks. Many states require an annual inspection that is usually due when the vehicleâEUR(TM)s registration and license plate tags are due for renewal. Other states have a one-time inspection requirement that is very thorough and limits any substandard cars and trucks from being driven without upgrades or repairs.

Inspection Stations

Procedure
The most common procedure for safety inspections involves pulling the car in the bay and putting it up on a car lift. The mechanic may first open the hood to verify the condition of the battery, windshield wiper fluid and other basic parts. The car is then raised in the air to inspect the condition of items such as the tires, brakes, motor mounts, exhaust and emissions control. Once the vehicle is returned to ground level, it may be driven off the car lift for additional items to be inspected. This includes items such as the headlights, taillights, signals, windshield wipers, horn and steering system. This portion may be done before or after the other items, but is frequently taken care of off the auto lift so that another mechanic can use the auto lift for the next inspection or repair.

Repairs
Depending on state law autel, some do not allow the inspecting business to make repairs in excess of certain dollar amounts. This prevents the shop from capitalizing on failures. In most cases, vehicle owners have a limited amount of time to remedy any problems before they are no longer allowed to drive it on the road.

Penalties for failure to have a car inspected or pass inspection are usually stiff enough to prevent motorists from disobeying the law. Penalties can include tickets, fines and points on a driverâEUR(TM)s license.
